On Saturday, October 27, 2018, 22 chapters across the U.S. joined together for our 3rd annual National Day of Service (NDS). Our chapters worked together nationally to make a difference locally and, once again, the day offered the perfect opportunity to honor our founder, Mary Virginia Merrick and celebrate her 152nd birthday!
A literacy theme, “Read to Me”, was chosen because we wanted to continue to address the “word gap” prevalent in the under-resourced children we serve. NCCS does this by creating hands-on programs which will help to instill an appreciation of books and a love of reading in children of all ages.
Our chapters held book drives with the donated books being placed in layettes for newborn babies and being given to children in various preschool enrichment programs and school libraries they support. Some chapters added “Book Nooks” or reading corners to their clothing distribution centers while others visited local Children’s Hospitals, entertaining them by reading to them while wearing costumes.
A $500 grant to purchase books was given to the chapter that had the most creative and organized NDS event. Congratulations to CCS of Pasadena, CA, and runner-up, CCS of Pittsburgh, PA! You made a wonderful difference in the communities you serve!
As Mary Virginia Merrick once said; “The spirit of the Christ Child Society is one of personal love for the Christ Child expressing itself in the personal service for the least of His little ones.” Thank you to all our chapters who participated this year!
